Beaulieu: Motoring Heritage

Your visit extends to Palace House, the historic ancestral home of the Montagu family. This unique estate combines 13th-century Beaulieu Abbey ruins with stunning Victorian Gothic architecture. You can explore centuries of history, from the serene Abbey ruins to the grand interiors of Palace House and its tranquil gardens. Enhance your experience by riding England's first monorail, which connects the museum to Palace House and offers panoramic views of the estate, or opt for a nostalgic journey on a vintage open-top bus.

Buckler's Hard: Boaters
Step back in time at Buckler's Hard, a remarkably preserved 18th-century shipbuilding village on the Beaulieu River, where mighty vessels like Nelson's "Agamemnon" were crafted; explore its unique broad main street, once a bustling construction site, and step inside a Georgian shipwright's dwelling, imagining life during the great age of sail.
For a delightful lunch at Buckler's Hard, visitors can choose between the inviting Captain's Table café, where they can savour a delicious meal amidst the unique maritime history and picturesque surroundings of this charming shipbuilding village, or the cozy Yachtsman pub, nestled beside the Beaulieu River and offering nautical charm with lovely riverside views.
Stonehenge
A short drive from Salisbury is Stonehenge, a prehistoric monument on Salisbury Plain in the ancient county of Wiltshire, consisting of a ring of standing stones, each a massive sarsen or bluestone, arranged in a circular pattern. The site's construction, spanning several phases from around 3000 BCE to 1600 BCE, remains a subject of intense archaeological debate.

The most iconic feature is the outer circle of sarsen stones, topped with horizontal lintels, and the inner ring of smaller bluestones. Surrounding the stone circles are earthworks, including a ditch and bank. The purpose of Stonehenge is still unknown, but theories range from a burial ground to a ceremonial site or an astronomical calendar, all contributing to its enduring mystery and historical significance.

The Visitor Centre provides an immersive experience, allowing you to visualise the stone circle's evolution through the ages. Discover locally unearthed artefacts, including the tools used in its construction, and learn about the theories surrounding its purpose, from marking solstices to lunar observations. Outside, witness reconstructions of Bronze Age huts, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who shaped this ancient landscape.
